Once upon a time, and not so very long ago, God created this island, ‘Short Beach,’ or ‘Flat Beach’ later known as Tucker’s Island. For it was Ephraim Morse who first settled there in the mid 1700’s and decades later sold the land to Reuben Tucker. It was Tucker who later developed the Island into one of New Jersey’s first resorts back in the late 1700’s, called Sea Haven! Avid wild-game hunters and fishermen sojourned by stagecoach and then by boat to retreat there. As interest grew, hotels, homes and schools were built as well as the famous Tucker’s Lighthouse.
But, there’s no happy ending to this tale. In due time the constant pounding of the Atlantic Ocean, and violent storms reclaimed this quaint tract of paradise. Bit by bit the island surrendered it’s land and buildings to the sea, and eventually the light house crumbled late in 1927. Fortunately, the folk tales, and fables live on, and are shared by the indigenous families who still reside in the area.
What has recently surfaced, however, are over forty original Deeds/Indentures, and Surveys of the streets and lots that were developed on the Island. We, at Legacies Old and New, are so excited to offer these exceptional, one of a kind, items to the general public at auction! What a rare opportunity to own a piece of history!
