A Glimpse of Yesteryear’s Nostalgia & Lore

For well over a century, men, women and their families have traveled, vacationed or lived in the South Jersey area.  The Pine Barrens and  Sea Shore have always had so much to offer.  The region still allures people to it’s sandy beaches, the marinas for boating, fishing, & crabbing, and the Pine Barrens for hunting.

This upcoming auction will rekindle memories for those who can appreciate the local heritage. Vintage local items that have been handed down from generation to generation of kin are now available to the public at auction. The successful bidder will take them home and start a new chapter to share with others!

  • Shown above is the actual hotel guest register of the National Hotel under the proprietorship of Mary Enfield Ryder. The register begins in 1928 through 1932!  Each sheet shows the name of the guest(s), where they were from, date & room number.  The real photo post card shows the National Hotel in the left hand corner.

During the colder weather, when fishermen couldn’t fish, many carved waterfowl and fish decoys for hunting and decorative use.  Included in the October 7 auction are decoys from Point Pleasant, Forked River, Ship Bottom as well as other unidentified folk art.  In addition to the decoys, we are also offering a large selection of wooden fishing lures.

Shown below are a few decoys that will be auctioned off on October 7.

And one of the greatest fish stories ever told, isn’t a fish story at all.  If you live in South Jersey, then you no doubt have heard of the Jersey Devil folk lore. Beginning in 1735 to this day legendary stories of the Jersey Devil  have been shared as to its sporadic sightings and how it terrorized those living throughout the Pine Barrens region.  Whether you believe in its existence or not, this creepy cast iron ring holder (shown below)  is a great conversation piece, and could be yours!

Come join us, for fun and conversation, on Saturday, October 7.  Maybe you’ll go home with a piece of South Jersey history.  Food will also be available for purchase by Chef Rich.

Everyone is welcomed…

Yesterday’s Redware, Designed by Lester Breininger, Offered at Auction

Founder of Breininger Pottery, Lester Breininger, was a ninth-generation Pennsylvania Dutchman. It was during the 1960’s when Breininger purchased a red clay dog figurine and had asked a teaching colleague if he could create a match so that he would have a pair.  His colleague suggested that he enroll in one of his classes and form one on his own under his guidance.  Well the rest is history, Lester Breininger was captivated.  He mirrored potters’ techniques and forms used centuries ago.  He dug clay from along the Tulpehocken Creek near Womelsdorf, PA. and before long, he mastered the techniques used by early potters, and the designs of early redware pottery.  Hence his work today is referred to as reproduction redware.

We at Legacies Old & New are pleased to offer a fine selection of Breininger Pottery at our October 7 auction.  Each piece is signed and some pieces note the weather at the time of  creating the figure i.e. ‘rain.’
