TOY-FEST at AUCTION part 2 — Oh Those Little Toy Guns!

We will be ushering in the New Year with an astonishing mix of antiques and collectibles from all eras, unlike anything that we’ve offered before.  We’ve hand picked items from homes in Washington, Barnegat, Tuckerton, West Creek, Berkeley, & Manahawkin, NJ as well as Catasauqua, PA.  The multi-estate auction will be held at the Eagleswood Fire Hall on Saturday, January 9 beginning with the auction Preview at 8 a.m.

The last blog showcased some of the old Tin Litho toys that we’ve uncovered in a dusty old attic dating from the early 1920’s to the end of the 1950’s. The time span was the greatest period for “hands-on” toys.   The era has long passed, but many of the toys are still around, and work as well as the day they were bought.

Today we will showcase some of the other outstanding, vintage toys on the auction block like the “…little toy guns…no sting no hurt no one…just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue…” (Carrie Underwood, Little Toy Guns).  Playtime was time spent on pretending and using your imagination while having hands-on with these great toys. I’ll bet many of you played cowboys and Indians with those little toy cap guns!  How many of you can recall the Lone Ranger with Tonto, Roy Rogers with Trigger, Dale Evans with Buttermilk, and Bullet too, as well as Hopalong Cassidy!  Well they will all be at the Fire Hall waiting to go home with their new owners! Once home you can play like nobody is watching! Oh, if the toys could talk!

What makes these toys so fascinating are the quality of the designs, as well as the fine finishing details.  Playtime was time spent on pretending and using your imagination while having hands-on with these great toys.

A short list of the overall toy manufacturers includes, but not limited to: Arcade, Buddy L, Hubley, J. Chein, Fleet Line, Mar/Marx, Ideal, Tonka, Elenee, Structo and Remco.

CLICKS, SNIPS, PASTED MEMORIES ‘BOUT TO UNFOLD & OFFERED AT AUCTION

We will be ushering in the New Year with an astonishing mix of antiques and collectibles from all eras, unlike anything that we’ve offered before.  We’ve hand picked items from homes in Washington, Barnegat, Tuckerton, West Creek, Berkeley, & Manahawkin, NJ as well as Catasauqua, PA.  The multi-estate auction will be held at the Eagleswood Fire Hall on Saturday, January 9 beginning with the auction Preview at 8 a.m.

This blog features Ferrotype (Tintype), Daguerreotypes, Photographs, Scrap Books, Greeting Cards, Letters, Autograph Books, Patent Application, Journals and Invoices and so much more from the past primarily from the Tuckerton and Washington, New Jersey areas. Collections & Memories from the Aristocrat to the Bay Men have surfaced and will rekindle memories for each of us! Join us to preview on-line or on auction day, and perhaps be the successful bidder and take home another story to share!

Scrapbooks offered are full of Cutouts, Advertising Cards, Die Cuts, Postcards, Trade Cards, Greeting Cards and more from that era.  It’s amazing how well preserved these items are after sitting in an attic for one-hundred years! We will be offering a nice selection of Union Cases and other Tintypes too.  A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal.  The image is then coated with a dark lacquer and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes were used during the 1860s through 1870s.

Decorative daguerreotype cases are referred to as Union cases. Often the cases have more value than the pictures they held. A Union case was small a square or rectangular and the top and bottom were designed to fit together.  When opened they revealed a small tintype.  The case could easily be carried in a pocket for a love one to take with them.  They were made with shellac and sawdust and then compressed.  Engravers cut thousands of detailed designs onto steel plates for use on the cases.  Union cases were also referred to as ‘sweetheart cases’ and were used up ’til the 1860’s due to the popularity of the cabinet cards.

Ham & Sam ‘The Minstrel Team’ Piano w/Key by The Ferdinand Strauss Corporation
Ham & Sam ‘The Minstrel Team’ Piano w/Key by The Ferdinand Strauss Corporation

One of the featured toys in this auction is
this original Strauss Ham & Sam “The Minstrel Team” Tin Toy Wind-Up.

The Minstrel Team is one of the earlier piano-band clockwork toys, and features some of the best and most intricate lithography of its time. Simple wind-up mechanism with attached key and stop/start switch. Seated piano pianist appears to slap at the keys, while his companion “dances” and “plays” banjo. Both figures are articulated at the shoulders, while the dancer is also hinged at the knees.

The rear of the piano includes the wonderful clown-on-globe- Strauss trademark, along with the company name and patent information.

It’s interesting to note that the 1921 patent date on the rear of the piano refers to the clockwork mechanism and not the toy itself. The actual toy was made available in 1925 through the Sears Roebuck store or catalog. It appeared for only one year and originally sold for 89¢.

'Jeepster' Dealership Premium ca. 1940
‘Jeepster” Touring Car Dealership Premium

Another highlight of this auction is a 1940’s toy ‘Jeepster’ Dealer Premium. Dealerships would have these on display in the showrooms because the level of detail is so perfect. Only 150 are known to have been made and this one is in excellent condition.

They were made by a company called Al-Toy in the ’40s, right after WWII.  It’s curious as to whether they were first made as promotionals or as toys, but they were toys. The Jeepster Touring Car is considered the last American touring car, and so it has a following all on its own as a collectible.
