One of the featured toys in this auction is
this original Strauss Ham & Sam “The Minstrel Team” Tin Toy Wind-Up.

The Minstrel Team is one of the earlier piano-band clockwork toys, and features some of the best and most intricate lithography of its time. Simple wind-up mechanism with attached key and stop/start switch. Seated piano pianist appears to slap at the keys, while his companion “dances” and “plays” banjo. Both figures are articulated at the shoulders, while the dancer is also hinged at the knees.

The rear of the piano includes the wonderful clown-on-globe- Strauss trademark, along with the company name and patent information.

It’s interesting to note that the 1921 patent date on the rear of the piano refers to the clockwork mechanism and not the toy itself. The actual toy was made available in 1925 through the Sears Roebuck store or catalog. It appeared for only one year and originally sold for 89¢.

Another highlight of this auction is a 1940’s toy ‘Jeepster’ Dealer Premium. Dealerships would have these on display in the showrooms because the level of detail is so perfect. Only 150 are known to have been made and this one is in excellent condition.

They were made by a company called Al-Toy in the ’40s, right after WWII.  It’s curious as to whether they were first made as promotionals or as toys, but they were toys. The Jeepster Touring Car is considered the last American touring car, and so it has a following all on its own as a collectible.

January 10 Multi-Estate Auction Update – This Blog Features ‘Glory’ Motion Picture & Civil War Relics

Today we’d like to share with you more information on Civil War items consigned to the January 10th auction and to also highlight some items consigned by a Civil War reenactor who had played a role in the motion picture ‘Glory.’

‘Glory’ is a 1989 American drama war film directed by Edward Zwick and starred Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman. The film was about the first formal unit of the Union Army during the American Civil War to be made up entirely of African-American men who served under Colonel Shaw, its white commanding officer. They were the first unit of what became known as the United States Colored Troops. The film won three Academy Awards including Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor.

Most of the filming took place primarily in Massachusetts and Georgia. Opening segments, meant to portray the Battle of Antietam, were volunteer military reenactors. Our consignor and her late husband were part of the reenactor cast. They served with the 3rd US Infantry based in Waldof, MD.

January 10 Multi-Estate Auction Update – This Blog Features Sad & Flat Irons

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season continues with Christmas only ten days away and our multi-estate auction less than a month away!

Keep in mind too that we currently have a TIMED AUCTION running through Friday, December 19.  You can access the Timed Auction at the following link: http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionlist.cgi?vuid=8694

The last of the items consigned to our January 10th auction came in yesterday, but today I’ll focus a bit on the large collection of Sad and Flat Irons on the auction block January 10th.

Sad irons/sadirons, also called flat irons or smoothing irons were created for the purpose of de-wrinkling fabric. “Sad” is an Old English word for “solid.”  The Oxford English Dictionary describes ‘sad’ as once meaning heavy or compact — thus the name ‘sadiron.’ The sadiron is one type of iron and dates back to the mid 1700’s.  There are many other irons that were developed for special uses such as irons specially shaped for sleeves and fluting irons.  One of the major drawbacks to the sadirons was that they cooled off quickly and therefore many homes had several irons so when one cooled off, another was ready to go.  There was also gas or fuel heated irons and a box iron that was hollow and it was meant to hold coals,  It was difficult to get a sufficient draft to the coals in order to keep them burning and the iron hot.  It wasn’t until 1882 when the first electric iron was patented.

Phew, imagine the work that went into pressing clothes back then.  Makes you really appreciate ‘permanent press’ clothing these days!

You will find a large selection of  various irons up for auction on January 10.  Photographs of select sadirons can be viewed in the Gallery Section at the following link: Click or paste this sadiron7link to view the Gallery Sections for both the TIMED and Multi-Estate Auctions:  http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionlist.cgi?vuid=8694

We’re almost done uploading photos of items in our Gallery sadiron3Section, so keep sadiron6sadironsadiron8checking back.

As mentioned above, we are running a TIMED AUCTION now through December 19.  You’ll find Nautical and Glass items there — all of which will make great Christmas gifts for the collector on Santa’s list.

The January 10th auction will be held at the Eagleswood Fire Hall located at 219 Railroad Avenue in West Creek, NJ.  The order of sale will begin with a preview at 8 a.m., Box Lot Items at 9 a.m., Cataloged Items at 10 a.m. followed by Table Items and Furniture.
